The English Language Academy (ELA) is the English-language unit of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), a university with 23,104 students from 83 countries. The campus is on the urban East Side of Milwaukee, overlooking Lake Michigan and about 1.5 hours from Chicago. The ELA office is in Garland Hall.

EAP courses are for international and domestic UWM students whose first language is not English and who hold foundation admission (undergraduate), dual admission (graduate) or full admission to UWM. They cover academic vocabulary, reading complex texts, essay writing, citing evidence and presentations. The summer program combines morning English classes with an afternoon focus on STEM, Business, Digital Design and Fabrication/Art, or U.S. Culture, and includes hands-on learning in Milwaukee. The Conversation Partner Program, which the ELA has run for more than 30 years, gives international students a semester of practice with a native speaker of English.
Students who want to earn a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree apply through UWM International Admissions and must submit a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score. ELA students can take part in campus life, including recreational sports, clubs and university sporting events.

Admission
EAP courses are open to international and domestic students whose first language is not English and who have foundation admission (undergraduate), dual admission (graduate) or full admission to UWM. International students applying for degree study must submit a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score with their application.
