The University of York is a research-intensive university in York, in the north of England, and a member of the Russell Group. It opened in 1963 with 230 students and now has more than 20,000 students from over 140 countries, 24% of them from outside the UK. It holds a Gold rating in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and was placed joint 10th in the Times Higher Education ranking of the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021).
York offers more than 600 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in three faculties and over 40 departments, schools and centres:

Students can spend time abroad at partner institutions around the world, and the university also has campuses in Mumbai (India) and Thessaloniki (Greece). The main campus in Heslington covers 500 acres of green space, lakes and wetlands within walking distance of the city centre, split between Campus West and Campus East. Housing
The university offers rooms on or very near campus for new undergraduates (allocated by college) and for postgraduates, as well as properties for families and support for visiting students, care leavers and estranged students. Rent includes bills, contents insurance, 24-hour security, wifi and wired internet, regular cleaning of kitchens and bathrooms, and a free bus across campus. Accommodation Services ([email protected]) also gives information on private off-campus housing, including purpose-built student housing. An accommodation guarantee is published for 2026/27.
