The University of Montana (UM) is the public flagship university of Montana (United States), located in Missoula, a small city of about 80,000 people in the west of the state. Chartered in 1893 and accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities since 1932, it has more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students and holds R1 ("very high research activity") status. Besides the main Mountain Campus, it includes Missoula College, a two-year college with campuses in Missoula and Hamilton.

UM offers associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, in person and online, with around 500 degree pathways and a student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1. At graduate level there are 32 doctoral degrees, 71 master's degrees and 11 graduate certificates, including law, pharmacy and physical therapy.

International students apply for undergraduate study through the Common App. Applicants below the English score for full admission can enter through a pathway or conditional admission. International first-year and transfer students admitted in full to the Mountain Campus are automatically considered for academic achievement scholarships. Residence halls for single students and apartment villages are available on campus.

  • Application and US$30 fee
  • Official English test score or proof of exemption
  • Official International Credential Evaluation Report (ICER) of the secondary school transcript (transfers with 12+ college credits: ICER of each college attended)

For the I-20, the 2026-27 minimum funding is US$55,988 for the Mountain Campus and US$40,382 for Missoula College. Online-only students are not eligible for F-1 visas.

Language Requirements

Minimum scores for full admission (pathway admission in brackets):

  • TOEFL iBT 70 (52)
  • IELTS Academic 6.0 (5.0)
  • Duolingo 105 (85)
  • Cambridge English 180 (165)

Financial Aid

International first-year and transfer students admitted in full to the Mountain Campus are automatically considered for a University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship (UMAAS), based on the converted GPA in their credential evaluation. Only students pursuing a first bachelor's degree are eligible; Missoula College, online-only, conditional and pathway students are not.

Housing

Residence halls for single students during the fall and spring semesters, open to students of UM and Missoula College; a new residence hall, Glacier Hall, is under construction. University Villages offer unfurnished apartments from studios to four bedrooms, with priority for married students, students with children and students with disabilities. Lewis and Clark Village is on the South Campus.
