The Universidad de Oviedo (University of Oviedo) is the public university of the Principality of Asturias, with more than 410 years of history. Teaching takes place on seven campuses in three cities: five in Oviedo (El Cristo, El Milán, Llamaquique, Catalanes and Oviedo-Centro), one in Gijón and one in Mieres, with additional university services in Avilés. The university states that it has about 21,000 students in 17 faculties and schools and two affiliated centres. In 2009 it received the Campus of International Excellence (CEI) accreditation, and it leads Ingenium, an alliance of European universities.
The university offers more than 120 degree programmes across arts and humanities, sciences, health sciences, social and legal sciences, and engineering and architecture. These include bachelor's degrees adapted to the European Higher Education Area, bilingual itineraries, double degrees with international universities, and Erasmus Mundus and inter-university master's degrees. Master's and doctoral studies are coordinated by the International Postgraduate Centre (CIP) and the Doctoral School. The university also offers its own qualifications, extension courses, a programme for people over 50 (PUMUO) and language courses through La Casa de las Lenguas.
For accommodation, students can choose between university halls of residence in Oviedo and Mieres and homestays with local families. Student guidance, support for people with special needs and job search advice are also available.
