The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) in Peru traces its history back to 1551. It is a public university, and it states that it ranks first among Peru's public universities in the QS, Scimago and Webometrics rankings. San Marcos also brings its teaching to several regions of Peru.
Undergraduate degrees (carreras) are organised in five areas of knowledge, each with its own faculties:
- Health sciences, including Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Psychology
- Engineering
- Basic sciences: biology, mathematics and physics
- Economics and management
- Humanities, law and social sciences, including Law and Political Science, Letters and Education
Master's and doctoral programmes are run by the Dirección General de Estudios de Posgrado (DGEP), and the university has 2,212 research lecturers. Admission to undergraduate degrees is mainly through an entrance exam held by subject area, for example the Examen de Admisión 2027-I. Students from universities abroad can apply for an external transfer into the same degree, and scholarship holders under specific cultural exchange agreements are exempt from the exam. Degrees obtained abroad must be revalidated or recognised to apply for postgraduate study. The university also has a language centre (Centro de Idiomas) and an office for scholarships and agreements.

- Registration by surname: A-F until 30 August 2026; G-O from 31 August to 13 September 2026; P-Z from 14 to 27 September 2026
- Late registration (all letters): 28 September to 9 October 2026
- Exam dates: 17 October 2026 (economics and management; humanities, law and social sciences), 18 October 2026 (basic sciences; engineering), 24 October 2026 (health sciences except Human Medicine), 25 October 2026 (Human Medicine)
