The Université de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (UNC, University of New Caledonia) is a multidisciplinary public university in New Caledonia, in the Pacific. It was created in 1987 as the French University of the Pacific and became the University of New Caledonia in 1999. Its main campus at Nouville, in Nouméa, opened in 2012 and brings together more than 3,000 people every day.

Courses range from bachelor's degrees (licence) to master's and doctorates, and the academic year starts in February. Teaching is organised in:

  • Law, economics and management (including the IAE)
  • Arts, languages and humanities
  • Science and technology
  • Technology courses at the IUT
  • Teacher training (INSPÉ)
  • The Pacific Doctoral School

Most courses are taught in French, with some in English. Exchange students can tailor a semester around areas such as climate change and sustainability, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, geology, indigenous studies, political science, public health, sustainable tourism and French as a foreign language; students from partner universities pay no additional tuition fees. Each year a three-week French Immersion Campus combines French classes with lectures, cultural activities and field trips.

  • Free movers from non-partner universities: apply directly to UNC and pay a UNC registration fee
  • Non-students: register as UNC students (checking the steps with Campus France) and receive a UNC diploma

Applications must be completed by 1 March for the semester starting in June and by 1 November for the semester starting in February. First-year bachelor's students apply through Parcoursup for the February 2027 intake.

Most courses at UNC are taught in French; some are delivered in English (information from the Language & Mobility Hub, [email protected]). To learn French, UNC runs a three-week French Immersion Campus (in 2026, 29 June to 17 July) with 45 hours of French as a foreign language, cultural workshops and excursions, accommodation in the International Student Residence, optional DELF/DALF preparation and exam, and 7.5 ECTS credits on request.
