The Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry (UMPV) is a university in Montpellier, France, specialising in arts, literature, languages, and the humanities and social sciences. It had 23,200 students in 2025-26, nearly 20% of them international students from 138 countries. Its main campus on Route de Mende covers 10.5 hectares; it also teaches at the Boutonnet, Saint-Charles and Saint-Louis sites in Montpellier and at the Centre Du-Guesclin in Béziers.

The university has six faculties (UFR) and one institute, and prepares 235 qualifications, including 22 bachelor's (licence) programmes, 52 master's programmes, 56 doctorates in two doctoral schools, university diplomas (DU) and distance-learning courses. Teaching is in French and a level of French is required. Its IEFE institute teaches French as a foreign language to around 680 students and is also a DELF/DALF exam centre.

International students can come for one or two semesters on exchange programmes such as Erasmus+ or with partners in Quebec, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia, or enrol individually for a full degree with support from the university's individual international mobility service. Campus life includes the La Vignette theatre, a symphony orchestra and a museum of plaster casts.

Admission Requirements

International students applying individually (outside exchange agreements) are supported by the individual international mobility service (SMII). The application procedure depends on nationality, the country where the secondary school certificate was obtained, the country of residence and the year and type of programme (licence, master's, doctorate or DU); some art programmes are only available through the CampusArt platform. Applications sent by email are refused. Not all programmes are open to international students. Non-EU students admitted must apply for a student visa before leaving.

Fees

Registration fees for the 2026-27 academic year:

  • National fees for all students: €178 for a licence (bachelor's) and €255 for a master's, plus €120 for distance learning
  • Differentiated fees for students from outside the EU: €2,902 for a licence and €3,950 for a master's

The university estimates the average monthly budget of a student in Montpellier at about €950, with rent between €450 and €700 a month.
