The Université Jean Monnet (Jean Monnet University, UJM) is a multidisciplinary university in Saint-Étienne, in the Loire department of south-eastern France, with about 20,000 students on five campuses in Saint-Étienne and its area, including Roanne. It is a member of the Universities Community of Lyon Saint-Étienne and of the European university alliance Transform4Europe, and has some 1,500 staff, 950 of them teachers and researchers.

UJM awards national bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in three main areas:

  • Science, engineering, technology and health, including a faculty of medicine and the engineering school Télécom Saint-Étienne
  • Law, economics and management
  • Arts, humanities and social sciences

The university has more than 400 international cooperation agreements. Exchange students can come for one or two semesters under Erasmus+ or bilateral agreements; most courses are taught in French, with B2 required (C1 for some programmes), but more than 200 courses or modules are taught in English. Its language centre CILEC teaches French as a foreign language from beginner (A1) to advanced (C1) level. The International Office and the Students Welcome Desk help newcomers, including with finding accommodation.

Bachelor's degrees (licence) and technology programmes are taught in the university's faculties and institutes:

More than 200 courses or modules are taught in English. CILEC offers French language and civilisation courses for international students at all levels from A1 to C1.

Admission Requirements

  • First year of a bachelor's degree: international applicants with a foreign secondary-school diploma must submit a preliminary admission application (Demande d'Admission Préalable, DAP), usually through the Études en France platform in countries with a Campus France centre; the procedure normally runs from November to the end of January before a September start. A French test (TCF) is held at the university, usually in February
  • Second or third year of a bachelor's degree, or a master's degree: no DAP; applications go through Études en France or, in other countries, the eCandidat platform
  • Exchange students: must be nominated by their home university, then register online on MoveOn; admission takes around one month

Language Requirements

Most courses are taught in French: exchange students need at least B2, and C1 for some programmes. More than 200 courses or modules are taught in English. First-year bachelor's applicants through the DAP procedure take the French Knowledge Test (TCF). The university's language centre CILEC offers French courses from A1 to C1.

Housing

Students can choose between CROUS public halls of residence, private student residences, a room with a host family or private housing; the Students Welcome Desk helps find accommodation in Saint-Étienne, and the platform Studapart is the university's housing partner. Guide prices given by the university:

  • CROUS residence room (9 m², renovated): €325 per month plus a €230 deposit; leases run nine months for a full academic year
  • Studio in a private student residence (18 m²): €400 per month plus a €400 deposit
  • Host family: about €690 per month

Students may apply for a housing allowance (aide au logement) from the CAF.
