The University at Buffalo (UB) is a public research university in Buffalo, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, which describes itself as New York's flagship university. It was the first SUNY campus invited to join the Association of American Universities (AAU) and has a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1.
UB offers more than 600 academic programmes, including more than 150 undergraduate degree programmes, from global affairs, media study and nutrition science to aerospace engineering and music, as well as a wide range of graduate and professional programmes. A University Honors College is also available.
According to the university, it welcomes more international students than any other SUNY campus. The Office of International Admissions handles undergraduate applications from abroad, and International Student Services (ISS) provides immigration advice, social events and support after arrival. International first-year students apply through ApplySUNY, the Common Application or the Coalition for College, with fall and spring intakes, and can apply for on-campus housing after admission.

International applicants (those who need a visa to study in the US) submit one application, via ApplySUNY, the Common Application or the Coalition for College, with a $50 non-refundable fee. First-year admission is holistic and considers academic marks, test scores, an essay and recommendations; UB expects the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (a B, or 83 out of 100). Documents not in English need an English translation. Some majors have extra requirements: limited enrolment in accounting and business management, an additional review for engineering, and auditions for acting, dance and music theatre. Applicants who have studied at a college or university apply as transfers.
