The University of Akron (UA) is a public university in Akron, Ohio, in the Midwestern United States, founded in 1870. Its main campus is on East Buchtel Avenue. UA describes itself as a publicly assisted metropolitan institution that teaches from associate through doctoral level, and it has students from 70 countries.
Undergraduates can choose from 200 majors, in fields that range from engineering and nursing to graphic design and geology. According to the university, its polymer science and plastics engineering programme is the top-ranked in the world. Graduate study includes master's, law and PhD programmes.
International first-year students apply with the UA application or the Common App and must show English proficiency, for example TOEFL iBT 71 or IELTS 6.0. Exchange students nominated by partner institutions can study at UA for one or two semesters. The International Center handles the I-20 process and arrival. New international undergraduates must live on campus for at least their first semester, and UA offers scholarship packages for international students.

International first-year applicants apply with the UA application or the Common App and must have finished secondary school before enrolling. Required:
- Official secondary school transcripts, with official translations if not in English
- A course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES member (e.g. TEC, WES, ECE or IEE)
- Official proof of English proficiency
SAT and ACT are optional (test-optional policy). Admission is rolling; first-time international students normally cannot start in summer.

The requirement can be waived, for example after three or more years of high school in an English-speaking country or in a school that teaches in English.

International students are generally charged as out-of-state residents. Add US$4,035 for each accompanying dependant.
UA offers scholarship packages for international students. New freshman scholarships are for applicants who have never enrolled at a college or university. International transfer students are automatically considered for the Provost's Scholarship for Transfer Students (US$1,000 to US$2,500 a year). Other funds include the Gorazde International Student Fund for Eastern European students.
All new international undergraduates must live on campus for at least their first semester; waivers are at the discretion of Residence Life and Housing. Residence halls on the North, South and East Quads range from traditional rooms with shared facilities to apartments with private baths, and there are living-learning communities for students with shared academic interests. The cost estimate assumes the most popular meal plan, with two meals a day.
