The University of Charleston (UC) is a private university in Charleston, West Virginia, in the United States. Its riverfront campus lies directly across from the West Virginia State Capitol complex and downtown Charleston. The university was founded as Barboursville Seminary and moved to its current location in 1947. It also teaches at UC–Beckley and online, and students from 45 countries study at UC.

Programmes are offered in-seat or online, at undergraduate and graduate level, in arts and sciences, business, health care and leadership. Graduate options include the MBA, Physician Assistant, Master of Occupational Therapy, Family Nurse Practitioner, Mental Health Counseling, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia and Doctor of Executive Leadership.

International student services staff support international students from application to graduation, including visa guidance, cultural integration programmes, housing support, tutoring and academic advising. Admission is rolling, and applicants whose schooling was not in English submit a TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, Cambridge or PTE score. Undergraduates can live in three residence halls on campus, and graduate students in the East Apartments.

Admission Requirements

Admission is rolling; international applicants should complete the process at least six weeks before the semester because of visa processing.

  • First-year: application and fee (or waiver), official secondary transcripts with literal English translations showing a minimum 2.5 GPA, and an English test score if needed
  • Transfer (12 or more college credits): application and fee, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation showing a minimum 2.0 GPA
  • ACT, SAT or IGCSE results are recommended for non-native English speakers
  • For the I-20: proof of financial resources, SEVIS fee payment and a passport copy

Language Requirements

International students who do not take the ACT, SAT or IGCSE submit an English test score. Minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT: 68
  • IELTS: 5.5
  • Duolingo: 90
  • Cambridge: B2
  • PTE: 46

Applicants below these levels may be considered for conditional admission. Students with scores in the lower range take an English diagnostic test on arrival and may have to complete an ESL course.

Fees

Undergraduate costs at the Charleston campus for 2026-27 (living on campus): tuition US$33,990, housing US$8,506, meals US$5,300 and fees US$500, for total fixed charges of US$47,796. The total estimated cost of attendance, including books and transport, is US$53,228.

Housing

Undergraduates can live in one of three residence halls: Brotherton Hall, Ratrie Hall or Middle Hall. Graduate students can live in East Apartments, a four-storey building attached to the campus parking garage. All halls are within walking distance of classes. International student services also help with housing.
