The University of New Mexico (UNM) is a public university in Albuquerque, New Mexico (United States). It was founded in 1889 as the state's flagship institution, and its campus covers nearly 800 acres near old Route 66 in the centre of the city. UNM is classified as an R1 research university in the Carnegie Classification.

UNM offers more than 215 academic programmes, from bachelor's to doctoral level, including nearly 100 undergraduate majors in fields from the arts and sciences to business and education. About 1,500 international students attend the university.

International applicants are handled by International Admissions, part of the Global Education Office. They apply online with a US$50 application fee and, once admitted, receive the I-20 form needed for the student visa. The Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) runs an intensive English programme on campus. Through the International Amigo Scholarship, eligible international students can pay the in-state tuition rate.

Admission

International freshmen and transfer students apply online and pay a US$50 application fee. After the application is processed, they send official transcripts, graduation certificates (translated if necessary) and English proficiency scores. Admitted students must show funding for their first year of study to receive the I-20 and admission letter for the visa appointment.

Deadlines for Fall 2027 (August 2027): priority application 1 March 2027, final application 1 May 2027, required documents 1 June 2027.

Language requirements

Minimum English scores (undergraduate / graduate):

  • IELTS: 6.0 / 6.5
  • TOEFL: 68 / 79
  • Duolingo English Test: 95 / 105
  • PTE: 47 / 53
  • Cambridge (CAE/CPE): C1 / C2

Exceptions include a bachelor's degree from an accredited US institution or from English-speaking Canada, the UK, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand, or completing the Academic Bridge level at UNM's CELAC.

Fees

Estimated cost of attendance for international undergraduates, 2027-28 academic year (full time, 15 credit hours, per year):

  • Tuition and fees: US$38,850 without scholarship (US$11,700 with the International Amigo Scholarship)
  • Room and board: US$12,471
  • Total estimated cost: US$59,688 without scholarship

Scholarships and financial aid

All international undergraduate applicants are considered automatically for one scholarship (they cannot be combined):

  • International Amigo Scholarship: in-state tuition rate, estimated value US$27,000 per year (3.5 GPA, or 3.0 GPA with ACT 26 or SAT 1240)
  • Leadership Scholarship: estimated value US$17,000 per year (3.0 GPA)
  • Beca Mexico, for citizens of Mexico: 1.5 times the resident tuition rate (2.5 GPA)

Priority deadlines for scholarship consideration: 15 March for fall and 1 May for spring admission.
