New Mexico State University (NMSU) is a public land-grant university founded in 1888, the first land-grant university in the US state of New Mexico. Its 900-acre main campus is in Las Cruces, at the crossroads of the I-10 and I-25 highways in the southwestern United States, and enrols more than 14,000 students from across the country and 89 other countries. NMSU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution and also has other campuses, 12 research and science centres and distance education.

The university offers more than 180 undergraduate majors, over 170 minors and more than 120 graduate fields of study, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1. Teaching is organised in these colleges:

International applicants are supported by International Student and Scholar Services, and undergraduates can also apply to the main campus through the Common App. First-time, full-time undergraduates on the Las Cruces campus must live in a university residence hall during their first academic year.

More than 180 undergraduate majors and over 170 minors, grouped by college:

  • Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences: 22 bachelor's programmes
  • Arts and Sciences: 23 departments in the fine arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences
  • Business: accounting, economics, finance, information systems, international business, management, marketing and PGA Golf Management
  • Engineering: six departments
  • Health, Education and Social Transformation: nursing, public health, social work, kinesiology, counselling, sociology, teacher education

Pre-professional programmes prepare for chiropractic, dental, law, medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy and veterinary schools. The Masters Accelerated Program leads to a bachelor's and a master's degree in as little as five years.

Admission Requirements

International first-year applicants need a secondary school qualification with a minimum 2.75 GPA, or an ACT composite score of 21 or an SAT score of 1060. Transfer students need a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA; those with fewer than 24 college credit hours must also meet the first-year requirements.

Every foreign secondary or post-secondary transcript must be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation agency and sent directly to NMSU; documents are emailed to [email protected]. Graduate applicants apply through the Graduate School.

Language Requirements

Undergraduate applicants (first-year and transfer) need a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 3.5, IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo English Test 95. Citizens of the English-speaking countries listed by the university are exempt, and a waiver may be considered for students who attended a US high school for at least two full years or transfer with enough US college credits.

Housing

NMSU Housing and Residential Life offers several on-campus housing options for different levels of independence and lifestyle. First-time, full-time undergraduates admitted to the Las Cruces campus must live in a university-operated residence hall for their first academic year (two semesters). Students apply through MyNMSU and can select roommates; rates are published for the current academic year.
