South University is a private university, established in 1899. The campus in Montgomery was built in 2003, and is located in the rapidly growing east side of the city. Associate and bachelor’s degrees are offered in the areas of business, health sciences, legal studies, criminal justice, and information technology. There is also a Master of Science in Professional Counseling available, which is a newly founded degree option. Instructors are well-qualified, while classes are small and cater for the needs of every student. The Montgomery campus participates in the Yellow Ribbon program, while the whole university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
South University is an accredited proprietary university, owned by Education Management Corporation. It has gained its accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and can award bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and associate degrees. The university prides itself in offering high-quality education with a personal approach to every student. The university’s roots lie in 1899, when Dr. John Draughon established Draughon's Practical Business College in Savannah, Georgia.
Since then the university has been constantly developing and has grown from a two-year college to a university offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs. South University proudly call themselves an innovator in higher education, offering degrees in a great variety of subjects - business, health care, design, legal and criminal justice, as well as an MBA program. A final important point about the university is that it is present in 11 locations - in Austin, Texas; Columbia, South Carolina; Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas; Montgomery, Alabama; Novi, Michigan; Richmond and Virginia Beach, Virginia; Savannah, Georgia; and Tampa and West Palm Beach, Florida. In each of the campuses classes are scheduled so that the individual needs of students can be met – there are classes in the morning, in the evening, and on Saturdays. South University offers a distance learning program, too, so students can choose a combination of online and classroom learning.
In the main campus of Savannah, the Health Professions Building was established in 2000, housing classroom and lab facilities for the Physician Assistant, Physical Therapist Assisting, and Medical Assisting programs for the College of Health Professions. In addition, the same building accommodates the campus library, student lounge, and administrative offices.
The library at South University’s main campus prides a very large book collection, featuring extensive law, business and medical resources. All campuses have very good library facilities, offering resources in both print and electronic formats, which you can access off-campus too. Some examples are: WESTLAW, the computerized legal research service; EbscoHost, a collection of thousands of journal articles covering business and academic subjects, and PQ Central, the largest aggregated resource on the market. In Savannah specifically, the library was moved in 2007 to include more computer labs, classrooms, and study areas.
In all campuses, the university puts emphasis on the computer technology facilities it provides, together with the well-equipped classrooms, student areas, and excellent facilities for medical students.
As already discussed, the university operates on eleven locations. The main campus is considered to be the one in Savannah, Georgia; it is the biggest one, too. The Savannah campus is home to the School of Pharmacy, while also offering degrees in business, health care, arts, and sciences. The Savannah campus is proud with the excellent library resources and facilities it offers.

Most financial aid options are based on the individual student circumstances. Also, you should note that financial aid depends on your state of residence, and you should know which campus you will be attending, before applying for financial aid. Here are the Federal financial aid options: Grant Programs; Loan Programs; and depending on the campus location, some institutional aid is provided. Finally, there is the option for work-study programs.
As far as the main campus in Savannah is concerned, the university ensures its students housing by contracting with local apartment communities, which enables them to live in a student atmosphere with other South University undergraduates. The apartments are conveniently located near the university, and are very well-equipped with kitchens, fridges, microwaves, dishwashers, etc. The housing deposit is required at the time of application, as it reserves a housing space, and is kept in the case any damage is made by students. Housing inspections are regularly held, and students have to pay immediately for any damages.
The university has 11 campuses, for which reason activities may vary by location. The university is proud with the community service it has integrated throughout all of its locations, however, and is proud that its students are deeply engaged with the communities in which they live.
