The University of Rochester is a research university in Rochester, in western New York State, just south of Lake Ontario. According to the university, it is a Tier 1 research university as designated by the Association of American Universities (AAU). It has more than 11,000 students and 1,000 faculty, and its main academic and medical campuses are next to downtown Rochester.

The university offers more than 200 majors, minors and graduate programmes in seven schools:

  • School of Arts & Sciences
  • Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences
  • Eastman School of Music
  • School of Medicine & Dentistry
  • School of Nursing & Health Sciences
  • Simon Business School
  • Warner School of Education & Human Development

Undergraduates follow a flexible curriculum with only one required course. More than 3,000 international students and scholars from over 130 countries study at Rochester. International undergraduates apply through the Common Application or Coalition application; the university states that it meets the full demonstrated need of all admitted students regardless of citizenship, and all applicants are considered for merit scholarships. Students who need extra language support may be admitted through the English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP).

Each school runs its own graduate admissions. Programmes include:

Admission Requirements

International first-year applicants apply through the Common Application or Coalition application and submit:

  • Secondary school transcript, mid-year report and final transcript
  • One teacher recommendation and a school report/counsellor recommendation
  • English exam results or an English Proficiency Waiver Request
  • International Financial Support Form (IFSF) if not requesting need-based aid, or the CSS Profile if requesting it

An interview is highly recommended; test scores are optional. Transfer applicants (eight or more college credits) also need college transcripts and a course-by-course evaluation (WES or ECE) of non-US college work. Bachelor of Music applicants apply directly to the Eastman School of Music.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English and who study in a non-English-speaking country take the Duolingo English Test, IELTS or TOEFL (official scores; TOEFL MyBest not accepted). Recommended scores:

  • Duolingo English Test: 130
  • IELTS: 7.5
  • TOEFL iBT: 100 (former scale) or 5 (new scale from 21 January 2026)

Applicants below these ranges are still encouraged to apply and may be admitted through the two-semester English for Academic Purposes Program. Native speakers and students with at least three years at an English-medium high school can request a waiver.

Fees

Undergraduate cost of attendance for the 2026-27 academic year (residential students):

  • Tuition: US$71,750 (flat rate for all full-time students; includes textbooks and select course materials)
  • Mandatory fees: US$1,622
  • Housing: US$12,822; food: US$8,506
  • Estimated total including transport and personal expenses: US$96,022

Financial Aid

The university states that it meets the full demonstrated need of all admitted students regardless of citizenship, through a combination of merit and need-based aid. For international applicants, financial need is a factor in admission, and only a small number qualify for need-based aid; they apply with the CSS Profile, while those who can pay the full cost submit the International Financial Support Form. All applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships, and a limited number of CSS Profile fee waivers are available.
