The University of Windsor (UWindsor) is a comprehensive university in Windsor, Ontario, Canada's southernmost city, with about 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The main campus at 401 Sunset Avenue lies on the Detroit River, next to the border crossing with the United States; a downtown campus houses the School of Social Work and the School of Creative Arts.

The university offers over 200 programmes across its faculties:

  • Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Business (Odette)
  • Engineering
  • Science
  • Education, Nursing and Human Kinetics
  • Law

Graduate programmes are run through the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and co-op, internships and volunteering offer experiential learning.

International students can apply directly to UWindsor, through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) or through an authorised educational agent, with intakes in September, January and May. Applicants who do not yet meet the English requirement can receive conditional admission and complete the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP), offered online or in person. International undergraduates may qualify for the Global Lancer Scholarship.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduate applicants apply directly to UWindsor, through the OUAC (if applying to more than one Ontario university) or through an authorised educational agent. After applying, they upload in the UWinsite Student portal:

  • Official secondary school diploma and transcripts
  • Post-secondary diplomas and transcripts, if applicable
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • A portfolio, where required

Documents not in English need an official translation. The recommended application dates are 1 May for September entry, 1 September for January entry and 1 January for May entry, to leave time for the study visa; later applications are considered if places remain.

Language Requirements

Applicants do not need to meet the English requirement when they apply: UWindsor issues conditional offers to students who will meet it through the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP) or by other means before starting. ELIP has four levels of intensive academic English, each 12 weeks at 20 hours per week, online or in person, with intakes in January, May and September. Completing ELIP level 3 with 75% meets the English requirement. A study permit is needed for both ELIP and the academic programme.

Financial Aid

International undergraduates may qualify for the Global Lancer Scholarship, worth up to CA$24,000 over four years, based on academic performance. The university also lists further scholarships for high-achieving international students and on- and off-campus job opportunities.
