West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC, also called Northern) is a comprehensive community college in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, United States. It was created by the West Virginia Board of Regents on 9 May 1972 and has campuses in Wheeling (1704 Market Street), Weirton and New Martinsville, serving students from West Virginia, Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

The college offers programmes of two years or less in the arts and sciences and in career-technical education, leading to Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degrees and to certificates. Programmes are grouped into career pathways:

  • Construction, Manufacturing, Energy and Transportation
  • Culinary and Hospitality
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Public Safety and Social Services
  • General Studies and Transfer Programs

Evening classes, online courses and community education courses are also available. Under an open-door enrolment policy, the college admits all adults seeking postsecondary education. The WV Invests Grant covers tuition and fees for eligible students in high-demand fields, Ohio residents pay in-state rates, and students from some Pennsylvania counties pay a special Metro Rate.

Programmes

Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degrees and certificates, grouped in career pathways: Business and Computer Information Technology; Construction, Manufacturing, Energy and Transportation; Culinary and Hospitality; Education; Healthcare; Public Safety and Social Services; General Studies and Transfer Programs; Degree Completion and Occupational Development. Courses are offered in person on three campuses, in the evening and online.

Admission

Northern has an open-door enrolment policy: it admits all adults who want postsecondary education. High school students recommended by their schools for early entrance are also admitted. Recruiters help prospective students choose a pathway, and applications are made online.

  • WV Invests Grant: covers tuition and fees for eligible students taking certificates or associate degrees in high-demand fields
  • Scholarships based on merit, financial need or donor criteria
  • Federal Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study and Federal Student Loans
  • State-based and institutional aid programmes
  • In-state tuition rates for Ohio residents and a Metro Rate for students from Washington, Greene, Beaver, Butler and Allegheny counties in Pennsylvania
