Since ancient times communication has long been a subject of human study. The ancient Greeks and Romans have been practicing the art of oratory and persuasion in their forums. This is the study of rhetoric, an important subject for students of Communication Studies. Communication is one of the pillars of today's society. As a field of study and subject of social thought, the English communication field only began during the early 20th century.

Communication Study is a field on how to start or convey or receive messages to or among individuals usually through a set of understood ways or tools. Communication Studies also covers a wide area of topics that can range from speeches, actual conversations to media broadcasting like the news you watch on television. It may also be known by other names depending on the country or school which offers this course. The course may simply be called Communications or Communication Arts, Communications Science, Mass Communication, Media Ecology, Media Studies, Rhetorical Studies, Speech Communication and still, others may call this course Mediology though it is somewhat a separate field of study. Communication Study is a distinct field but it often overlaps academic disciplines like advertising and public relations, film and cinema, journalism in print or broadcast and radio and television. As of now, it is now being push as the field of discipline that will include all these related fields. It has been a long-held view that Communication Study is both a part of social sciences and humanities. Fields of study like anthropology, economics, linguistics, political science, psychology rhetoric and sociology have major influences in this field.

Graduates of this course could start and make their careers virtually in every sector or industry they choose. They could find work in either government or private industry or non-profit organizations and can make a career in advertising, human resources, publications, research and development, sales and marketing, training and another possibility is being an independent contractor. As a communication specialist, there are many opportunities in working as a freelancer or as a consultant for organizations like those engaged in advertising, public relation, schools or government.

What specific jobs or work could a Communications graduate expect? Business corporations are always seeking well-qualified people to handle their public relations department. Getting this kind of positions though could be tough. Those with the experience related to the job usually are preferred than the newly graduates or those lacking in experience. One could become a public relation specialist working for a company or working independently. Public information officers are needed in government offices. Those who would like to work with show business personalities like actors or even politicians could become their publicists. There are also available works in non-governmental or non-profit organization like communications director or any such equivalent position. A communication specialist could already find work and start a career upon acquiring a bachelor’s degree in Communication Study, but getting a master’s degree could enhance career opportunities in this field even further.
