Arts Studies in ArgentinaThe chance to study the Arts abroad is one that few students get, but those that do are usually much better off for having lived the experience. This is especially true of students who elect to study in a less traditional locale—a country such as Argentina. Officially known as the Argentine Republic, Argentina is a large, elongated country on the continent of South Africa. The country shares borders with Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay to the north, Uruguay to the northeast, and Chile to the west. In the east, Argentina has a long coastline, formed by the South Atlantic Ocean. Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world by total area, and the second largest country in South America, after Brazil. The country has a population of just over 42 million and its capital and largest city is Buenos Aires.
Arts Education in ArgentinaArts education in Argentina is a very popular field of study among students and is offered by a good number of the country’s colleges and universities, including the University of Buenos Aires, a large public school in the nation’s capital. These studies typically lead to a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts (BFA), also termed a Bachelor of Creative Arts or Bachelor of Visual Arts, depending on the country.
At the University of Buenos Aires, the undergraduate degree in the Arts differs from the standard Bachelor of Arts degree, in that the majority of the program consists of a practical studio component, as contrasted with lecture and discussion classes. A typical BFA program in Argentina consists of approximately two-thirds study in the Arts, with one-third in more general liberal arts. The BFA also tends to focus on intensive work in the visual arts supported by a program of general studies, whereas the standard liberal arts degree (BA) focuses on art and design in the context of a broad program of general studies.
Students who opt to pursue a degree in the Arts are usually required to select a specialty, such as acting, musical theater, ceramics, computer animation, creative writing, dance, dramatic writing, drawing, film production, visual effects, animation, graphic design, industrial design, visual arts, interior design, metalworking, music, new media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, stage management, or television production. Some universities, both in Argentina and internationally, instead give their students a broad-based education in many disciplines of the arts.
Although a Bachelor of Fine Arts is traditionally considered a four-year degree, a BFA program may take longer to complete because of the amount of practical studio course work required.
