Language school in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Academia Hispano Americana

The Academia Hispano Americana (AHA Spanish) is a Spanish language school in San Miguel de Allende, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. It opened in 1959 and was the first school in the town to specialise in teaching Spanish as a second language. The school occupies an 18th-century colonial building with nine classrooms, a central patio and gardens, three and a half blocks from the main square.

  • Intensive Spanish Program (an average of six hours of class a day)
  • Two semi-intensive programmes
  • One-on-one Spanish (Español Uno a Uno)
  • Diploma in Spanish as a Second Language

All classes are taught in Spanish by native-speaking instructors. Average class size is four to six students, with a maximum of 12. The six levels of the core curriculum run from CEFR A1 to B2. In the afternoons, Spanish-language workshops and seminars on Mexican and Latin American culture, history and literature complement the morning classes.

The school places students with Mexican host families; it does not arrange other types of housing. Applicants are advised to send the application form at least one month before their intended start date.
