Deutsch in Österreich (German in Austria) is the language centre on the campus of the University of Klagenfurt (Alpen-Adria-Universität), in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in the Austrian region of Carinthia. It grew out of summer German courses that the university helped set up and was founded in 1979. It is an adult education provider, open to anyone from the age of 17, and its courses are certified to ISO 29990 by TÜV Austria and hold the Ö-Cert quality label for adult education.

Teaching follows the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from A1 to C2. The offer includes:

  • Intensive German courses (24 lessons per week)
  • Semester evening courses in German and other languages
  • University course in German as a foreign and second language
  • Preparatory course for the university's supplementary examinations (VAAU)
  • ÖIF integration courses and tests
  • Individual tuition in German, English, Italian, Spanish, Slovenian and Russian

On request, the centre books accommodation for course participants: rooms in the Youth Hostel Klagenfurt during the spring and autumn courses, single apartments in the Concordia student residence during the summer courses, or, depending on availability, rooms in the home4students dormitory.

Programmes

  • Intensive German courses: 24 lessons of 45 minutes per week (72 lessons in three weeks)
  • University course in German as a foreign and second language (DaF/DaZ): semester evening course of about 75-85 lessons
  • Preparatory course (VAAU) for the University of Klagenfurt's supplementary examinations in German and school-leaving content: 216 or 288 lessons per semester
  • ÖIF integration courses (A1, A2) and integration tests (A1-B1)
  • Semester evening courses in other languages
  • Individual tuition in German, English, Italian, Spanish, Slovenian and Russian

Housing

On request, the language centre books accommodation for course participants:

  • Youth Hostel Klagenfurt (spring and autumn courses): single, double or multi-bed rooms with shower and toilet, breakfast included, 3 minutes' walk from the university
  • Concordia student residence (summer courses): single apartments with private bathroom and kitchen, 20 minutes' walk from the university, optional bike rental
  • home4students dormitory (all year, booked directly with the dormitory): single rooms in shared flats opposite the university's main entrance

Rooms booked through the centre are available from the Sunday before the course to the Saturday after it ends.
