Kathmandu University (KU) is an autonomous, not-for-profit, self-funding public university in Nepal, established by an Act of Parliament in December 1991. Its central campus is in Dhulikhel; the Schools of Arts, Education and Management are located in Lalitpur. KU offers more than 200 long- and short-term programmes and courses, from intermediate level to PhD, and had produced 41,275 graduates by June 2023.

Teaching is organised in seven schools:

  • School of Arts
  • School of Education
  • School of Engineering
  • School of Law
  • School of Management
  • School of Medical Sciences
  • School of Science

Subjects include business administration, pharmacy, environmental science, biotechnology and several branches of engineering. KU runs collaborative programmes with institutions in Nepal and abroad, for example an M.Tech in Energy Technology with IIT Madras and a Bachelor of Information Technology with Crown Institute of Higher Education in Sydney, and has signed partnership agreements with universities such as Macquarie University and NTNU. The main annual intake for undergraduate and most graduate programmes is in autumn (July to September). Selection may include an entrance test, an analytical essay, a group discussion and an interview. About 10% of students receive scholarships, and the university also has information on credit transfer.

Admission

Autumn (July to September) is the normal annual intake for all undergraduate and most graduate programmes; for some graduate programmes the school or department sets the intake date. The admission process includes some or all of these steps:

  • Entrance test (paper- or computer-based)
  • Analytical essay writing
  • Group discussion
  • Personal interview

Eligibility criteria for each programme are published on the website of the school concerned.
