Makerere University

University, Graduate school in Kampala, Uganda

Makerere University is a university in Kampala, Uganda. It began in 1922 as a technical school, later renamed Uganda Technical College, which opened with 14 day students studying carpentry, building and mechanics. The college became a Centre for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935 and started offering post-school certificate courses in 1937.

English is the language of instruction. Programmes range from undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to short courses and continuing career options. Besides regular study, the university offers evening programmes, mainly for working people, and distance or external study. A course normally runs for one semester and is assessed through coursework (30 to 40% of the marks) and university examinations in the last two weeks of the semester.

Applications are made through the university's online portal; they open in mid-May and close at the end of July each year, with separate guidance for international, postgraduate, diploma-holder, direct-entry and mature-age applicants. The Advancement & International Office handles international students' welfare. Nine halls of residence on the main campus house 4,400 undergraduates, but places are limited and never automatic. Many students live in privately owned hostels inspected by the university, most within half a kilometre of campus.

Housing

Makerere has nine halls of residence for undergraduates on the main campus, with 4,400 places in total:

  • Six for men: Lumumba, Livingstone, Mitchell, Nkurumah, Nsibirwa and University Hall
  • Three for women: Africa, Complex and Mary Stuart

A hall place is never automatic and must be confirmed by the Dean of Students and the warden; Diploma, Mature Age Entry and external or distance students are generally not eligible. Students without a campus place can ask the Dean of Students for an affiliated hostel. Private hostels (mixed or female) are inspected and graded A to C by the university; most are within half a kilometre of campus and run shuttles.
