National University (NU) is a veteran-founded nonprofit university based in San Diego, California. Since 1971 it has focused on accessible higher education for working adults and other busy learners, and it reports more than 250,000 alumni worldwide. NU is accredited by WASC.

The university offers more than 150 degree programmes, credentials and certificates, from associate degrees to doctorates. Study areas include:

  • Criminal justice, public service and law
  • Arts, humanities, science and mathematics

Courses last four or eight weeks and are taken one at a time, with monthly starts and evening, weekend and online options. Students can study fully online through National University Online or at more than 20 campus sites in California, including the main campus at 9388 Lightwave Avenue in San Diego; there are also military sites on active-duty bases. Applications are free and reviewed year-round, and transfer students benefit from agreements with more than 116 community colleges. Financial aid includes need-based grants of up to $3,600 a year and a 25% tuition discount for eligible veterans and their families.
