The Universidad de Montevideo (UM) is a university in Montevideo, Uruguay; its main building is at Prudencio de Pena 2544. It teaches business and economics, engineering, law, communication, humanities and education, and psychology, and it has a biomedical sciences centre and the IEEM business school.

Undergraduate degrees (carreras de grado) include:

  • Public accounting, business administration, economics, finance and marketing
  • Digital business (also online), international business and data science for business
  • Politics, Philosophy and Economics
  • Communication, law and notarial studies
  • Humanities, translation, primary teaching and mathematics teaching
  • Civil, industrial, chemical, computer, telematics, and data and AI engineering
  • Psychology

Each area also offers postgraduate programmes; IEEM runs an MBA, a master's in health care management and executive programmes. Since 2016 UM has taken part in Erasmus+ projects for the mobility of students, teachers and staff, with exchanges at universities such as NOVA University Lisbon. Applicants to undergraduate degrees have a personal interview and take the UM aptitude test, online for most degrees and in person for engineering; admissions for 2027 are open.

Admission

To be admitted at the University of Montevideo, International Students should comply with the following prerequisites: 1. Complete the application form and send it to the Office of International Affairs. 2. Send the official home university transcript and one (1) academic letter of reference. 3. Short essay (about 200 words) stating the reasons for studying at the UM. 4. Photocopy of Passport. 5. Study plan at UM (a list of desired classes) 6. Language requirements

Classes are taught in Spanish. English courses are mandatory at the undergraduate level. The Foreign Languages Department offers intensive and regular courses for foreigners, in English and in Spanish, in a wide range of fields: Latin American Culture, Business Environment, Global Supply Networks and Manufacturing, Economic Integration, Legal Systems, etc. Contact: [email protected]

Scholarships and financial aid

UM's scholarships are aimed mainly at students entering a degree from secondary school in Uruguay, and most require the UM aptitude test:

  • Beca UM: competitive 70% scholarship open to all averages
  • Academic excellence scholarships of 40% to 70%
  • Scholarships of up to 80% for students from public secondary schools in Montevideo and the metropolitan area, and 40% for students from schools outside the capital
  • Merit scholarships of up to 90% for students who cannot cover the full cost
  • Sports scholarships of up to 25% or up to 80%
  • Scholarships of 30% to 100% for teacher training (Magisterio, Profesorado de Matemática)
