The University of Buea (UB) is a state university in Buea, the capital of Cameroon's South West Region. It was conceived in the English-speaking tradition, within Cameroon's bilingual and multicultural context. Most of its students come from the English-speaking part of the country, but it also admits students from other regions and from abroad. The university reports more than 33,000 students, over 650 permanent and 200 part-time staff, and partners at more than 40 universities in Africa, Europe and North America.

UB offers about 80 degree programmes at bachelor's, master's and PhD level, designed to follow the Bologna system, in fields such as agriculture, accountancy, biochemistry, gender studies, medicine, microbiology, nursing and translation and interpreting. Its faculties and schools include:

  • Faculties of Arts, Science, Education and Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Engineering and Technology
  • Faculty of Laws and Political Science
  • Faculty of Social and Management Sciences
  • Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine
  • College of Technology and Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI)
  • Higher Teachers Training College (HTTC) and Higher Technical Teachers Training College (HTTTC)

The university also runs six-month ICT certification courses with Cisco Networking Academy and Cloud Computing Academy. Applications are made online through the admissions portal; undergraduate applicants need a high school certificate or equivalent, such as the A Level or the baccalauréat. UB offers academic scholarships based on merit as well as athletic scholarships.

Admission

  • Undergraduate: completed application form and a high school certificate or equivalent (e.g. A Level or baccalauréat)
  • Graduate: a good first degree in the relevant field from a recognised university; work experience is an advantage
  • Postgraduate: a good master's degree in the relevant field from a recognised university; work experience is an advantage

Applications are made online through the admissions portal, with documents uploaded. After review, admitted students receive a student letter with their student number, pay fees through the student portal and have a medical check-up at the health centre before registering for courses.

Scholarships and financial aid

UB awards academic scholarships, for which prospective students can apply on the basis of academic merit, and athletic scholarships for student-athletes. Research grants are also available. Scholarship enquiries go to the Admissions Office ([email protected]).
