Yale University was founded in 1701 and is based in New Haven, Connecticut. Undergraduates study at Yale College, which teaches the liberal arts and sciences; master's and doctoral degrees are offered by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and specialised degrees by 13 professional schools. Facilities include the 136-acre West Campus, which hosts research in health, culture, energy and the environment, the Sterling Memorial Library, the largest of the university's libraries, and the Yale University Art Gallery.

Yale College is organised in residential colleges, a system that has existed for more than 70 years. Students can take part in study abroad, international internships and directed research. Applications go directly to the school or programme concerned; the admission rate for the Class of 2028 was 3.9%. Yale states that it admits qualified students without regard to their financial circumstances, and it offers financial aid to international students on the same terms as to U.S. students.

Financial aid is offered to international students on the same terms as to U.S. students. According to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the average scholarship for financial aid recipients in the Class of 2028 was $74,146.
