About Language Immersion Courses in Trinidad and Tobago

Learning to speak and understand the English language offers many benefits both personally and professionally, and if this is your desire, there is no method as expedient nor as effective as a full-immersion language-acquisition program—a program in which you study the English language while living for a few weeks in a country where it is actually spoken.  Of course, English is a widely spoken language, and there are several potential destinations that offer full-immersion courses—the United States, Canada, the UK and even Australia—but if you truly want to make this experience a memorable one, we recommend you consider the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is a small, independent English-speaking country in the southern Caribbean, situated just off the coast of northeastern Venezuela and south of Grenada.  It consists of two major islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and a number of smaller land masses that together comprise just less than 2,000 square miles of land area.  Of the two major islands, Trinidad is by far the largest, accounting for 94 percent of the land area and 96 percent of the population—a population of 1.2 million as of the last census.

The language programs in Trinidad and Tobego, of which there are a just a few, specialize primarily in teaching English, although instruction can be found in Spanish and a few other languages as well.  Participants in these programs have the unique opportunity to live in Trinidad and Tobago for 2-6weeks, and accommodations are typically arranged by the language school.  While in the country, students will receive intensive English language instruction from a qualified language specialist.  The programs vary depending on skill level, but most offer engaging and interactive classroom sessions, in which a number of audio and visual modalities are employed to expedite learning, as well as cultural excursions provided by the language academy, allowing students to hear the language as it is actually spoken while practicing the skills they have learned.  There is also plenty of free time available, in which students can explore and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands and take part in a number of fun and enriching activities.

There are hundreds of things to do and see in Trinidad and Tobago, but perhaps the most noteworthy event, assuming you are in the country at the correct time of year, is the island’s world famous “Carnival,” held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (usually late February to early March).  Although other countries and cities, including Brazil and New Orleans, have adopted their own Carnival-like celebrations, the original Carnival, and still the most unique, is conducted on the island of Trinidad.  The event features scores of fun cultural events, great food, amiable people and uninhibited festive dancing to original calypso and soca music.  The party culminates with a spectacular street parade, in which revelers don traditional costumes while competing in events such as traditional stick fighting and limbo.

Studying English in Trinidad and Tobago is an experience you’ll never forget.  Not only will you learn valuable English language and comprehension skills, but the full-immersion model allows you to learn quickly, as you will be constantly surrounded by people who actually speak the language.  There’s really nothing like it, in fact, the entire experience is like combining the most effective form of language instruction with an all-inclusive Caribbean vacation.
