If you were thrilled reading Agatha Christie’s, Ellery Queen’s (pseudonym of two American writers: Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee), Arthur Conan Doyle’s, Wilkie Collins’ breath taking stories, you are a potential learner of Criminology, the scientific study of criminals and criminal behavior. If you were engrossed to the intertwining events that puzzles you up to the end, it is no wonder that you would be absorbed more when you are in Simon Fraser University School of Criminology, or at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge, UK, or at the California State University, Department of Criminology, or some other universities around the world offering the Criminology Program or Bachelor of Science in Criminology.

You would be a full time student acquiring the skills of solving the intrigues that surround the subject matter. In school, you study thoroughly the Development of Criminology with three phases under it: classical criminology; modern criminology; and the independent criminology. You study more about the objectives of Criminology; the Biological Theories of Crime where two phases come under it – the Genetic Factors, and the Neurological Abnormalities.

In school, you were taught the Psychological Theories of Crime that has: 1. Moral development theories; 2. Social learning theories; and 3. Personality theories. Near the later part of the course you learn about the Environmental and Social Theories of Crime that discuss the social causes, and the economic causes. Under the first cause are the study of Social-structural theories, and the Subcultural theories. In the last part of the study, the learner would know the Theories of Criminal Opportunity.

In school of criminology where more than one branch of learning is concerned, the student strides into the realm of sociology, the social anthropology, and the books of law. The student continues researches on subjects such as: incidence; forms, reasons and effects of crime, the social and administrative rules, and the response to the offense. There are disciplines (branches of knowledge) that are covered by Criminology: psychology and sociology; design and systems analysis; and decision theory. Inasmuch as criminology is experiential and theoretical subject, it progresses in the environment of additional learning of social sciences.

There are areas of learning in criminology such as: prevention of crime; crime statistics; criminal behavior; criminal careers and desistance; family cruelty; assessment of criminal justice agencies; apprehension of crime; survey of victims of international crime; criminal behavior of youths; prison and punishment management (penology); and sociology of law. In the outcome the student would acquire BS in Criminology or BS in Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Some of the schools in criminology are the Regis University’s Bachelor of Science in Criminology; Eastern Michigan University; Drury University; University of Maryland; University of Cincinnati; Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; University of California; University of Missouri; and universities in every state in the U.S. Many criminology schools are found around the world: in Asia, Africa, and in Europe where students could take the course.

After the studies, the graduate can pursue different career opportunities such as: youth counseling therapy; drug or alcohol abuse counseling; law enforcement; criminal investigation; imprisonment as corrective measure and release. He can also work in work in public defender’s office; police departments; juvenile court; coordinator on crime prevention; law reform researcher; consumer advocate; crime intelligence analyst; community corrections coordinator; police officer; advisor on drug policy; analyst on environment protection; and criminologist consultant. Some related jobs are: security guards; private investigators and detectives; and investigation officers. The wide career spectrum fleetingly engages graduates in Criminology for a much brighter outlook.
