Advertising Design Study Programs

Level: Undergraduate Bachelors     Location: Villanueva de la Cañada

Advertising design is the part of graphic design that works for brands and campaigns. The designer turns a commercial or institutional message into images: posters, press and outdoor advertisements, packaging, social media pieces, banners and video spots. Spain's official curriculum for the field sums up the job as proposing and producing graphic solutions that transmit advertising messages on behalf of companies, institutions or other professionals.

Students learn the craft of graphic design and the logic of advertising side by side. The Spanish higher cycle in advertising graphics (Gráfica Publicitaria) is a good guide to the content of most programmes. Its core modules include typography, fundamentals of graphic design, photography, the history of the advertising image, advertising theory and marketing, audiovisual language and technology, computer tools, and advertising graphics projects, which carry the largest share of the hours.

Qualifications and levels

  • Vocational higher cycle (Spain). The title of Técnico Superior de Artes Plásticas y Diseño en Gráfica Publicitaria is an official qualification of 2,000 hours, to which 120 ECTS credits are assigned. It includes a period of practical training in companies, studios or workshops and is taught in art schools (escuelas de arte).
  • Higher studies in design (Spain). The official higher artistic education in design has four specialities: graphic, product, interior and fashion design. Study plans last four academic years of 60 credits each, 240 credits in total, and the qualification is official and valid throughout Spain. Advertising work is usually part of the graphic design speciality.
  • University bachelor's degrees. Some university degrees in communication, advertising or multimedia include graphic design. The Grado en Comunicación Audiovisual y Multimedia at ERAM, a centre affiliated with the Universitat de Girona, is an official university degree of four years and 240 ECTS that covers graphic design, 3D, film, interaction design and photography.
  • Private school programmes. Design schools also run their own multi-year programmes and shorter courses. Idep Barcelona, for example, teaches a four-year programme in design and art direction (210 ECTS) and states that it leads to a título propio (a university's own qualification, not an official degree) of the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU.
  • Associate degrees and bachelor's degrees abroad. In the United States the subject is taught at community colleges and universities. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that graphic designers usually need a bachelor's degree in graphic design or a related field.

Whatever the route, a portfolio matters. The same US source says that candidates for design jobs should have a portfolio that shows their creativity and originality. Most programmes are built around projects for that reason.

Where to study advertising design

SpainExchange lists six schools for this subject: four in Spain, one in the United States and one in India. In Spain they include ERAM in Salt (Girona), Idep Barcelona and INSA Business, Marketing & Communication School in Barcelona, and the Escuela de Arte de Oviedo. In the graphic and audiovisual communication family, the Oviedo school's website lists higher cycles in printed graphics, illustration and photography. Robeson Community College in North Carolina is the example in the United States.

Teaching in Spain is in Spanish, and in Catalonia also in Catalan: ERAM gives Catalan, Spanish and English as the languages of its degree. Programmes in the United States and India are taught in English.

Before enrolling, check three things with the school: whether the qualification is official (a higher cycle, a higher design title or a university degree) or the school's own; how many hours of practical work and company placement the programme includes; and which software and media (print, web, video, motion graphics) are covered.

Careers

Graduates work in advertising agencies, design studios and the communication departments of companies and institutions. Typical first jobs are junior graphic designer, layout artist or production artist; with experience, designers move on to art director or creative roles. Many work freelance.

Official employment data are available for the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 253,100 jobs for graphic designers in 2025 and projects a 2 percent decline from 2025 to 2035. It counted 140,200 jobs for art directors, with projected growth of 4 percent over the same period; art directors usually need five or more years of experience in a related occupation.
