Studies & Degrees in Dubbing Actor

A dubbing actor records the dialogue of a film, series or other production in a new language, so that it replaces the original voices. The work is acting: the performer has to convey the character's emotions with the voice alone, in time with the picture. Dubbing actors lend their voices to foreign actors and animated characters, and many also work as voice-overs for documentaries and advertising.

Training concentrates on four areas, which are also the main blocks of the course offered by the one school listed for this subject in our directory: voice (breathing, diction and voice care), voice-over, acting and dubbing technique in a recording studio. Courses often add the technical side, such as working with recording software, and help students build a demo of their voice.

Qualifications and levels

Private courses. In Spain, dubbing is taught mainly in private schools and recording studios, through courses that range from short workshops to longer programmes. Ask each school what recognition its certificate has before enrolling.

The example in our directory is the Curso de Doblaje of Campus Training. It is taught by the audiovisual school Treintaycinco mm, a partner of Campus Training. The course has 800 hours, combines online and on-site study and includes 80 hours of workshops in recording studios. Students have two years to complete the materials and receive a two-year licence for the practice application Dub35mm. The modules are voice, voice-over, acting and dubbing. According to Campus Training, students obtain the school's own qualification (título propio) from Treintaycinco mm, and an endorsement from the Instituto Nebrija is available on payment of a fee. Campus Training also offers a Curso de Locución (voice-over) of 400 hours.

Official acting degree. The official higher qualification for actors in Spain is the degree in Arte Dramático, taught in higher schools of dramatic art. It has three specialities: stage direction and dramaturgy, scenography, and acting (Interpretación). The curriculum covers four academic years of 60 credits each, 240 credits in total, and the qualification is official and valid throughout Spain. It trains actors in general and is not a dubbing course, but it gives the acting and voice foundation on which dubbing builds.

Related vocational training. The professional family Imagen y Sonido covers the technical side of the studio, for example with the Técnico Superior en Sonido para Audiovisuales y Espectáculos. It also has a specialisation course in audio description and subtitling.

Where to study it

Our directory lists one active school for this subject, Campus Training, in Spain. Its dubbing course is taught in Spanish and combines distance learning with studio workshops.

Dubbing is tied to a language and to the cities where the studios are. A student should train in the language and accent in which he or she wants to work. Spanish-speaking students from Latin America should bear in mind that productions are dubbed separately for Spain, in European Spanish, and for Latin America. When comparing schools, check how many hours are spent in a real studio, who the teachers are and whether the course ends with a professional demo.

Careers

Campus Training names cinema, series, advertising spots, video games and radio as the fields where dubbing actors work. Typical tasks are dubbing foreign actors, voicing brand campaigns, narrating documentaries and other programmes, and voicing animated characters. Related roles in a dubbing studio are those of dubbing director and script adapter.

In Madrid, dubbing professionals are represented by ADOMA, the Sindicato de Artistas de Doblaje de Madrid, a union of dubbing actors, directors and adapters. ADOMA publishes the collective agreement for the sector and its salary tables, both updated for 2026. They are the reference for pay in Madrid. We found no official employment statistics for this profession.
