GhanaIndiaThe United States

Home Science is a study about everything domestic. It is a study about household and everything connected to it. For many years, we have been evolving vastly in different aspects of this field.

It all started in the 19th century, because they wanted young women to be ready to their future duties as a wife, they started to put-up a school and they called it home economics. Home Economics and Livelihood Education were first presented in the United States, Canada and Great Britain, followed by Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

Home Science’s widespread throughout other countries and continents made it clear of its importance. Home science actually derived from the word home economics or more so likely it evolved to it. But some remained to calling it “Home Economics” and others preferred “Home Science”.

Home science has a lot of different topics of this field to offer. They have interior designing, child development, fabric and apparel, money managing, household interactions and development and more.

Because we practically “live” home science everyday, job-landing after graduation is not as hard as you think. The salary they pay is reasonable too, depends on what kind of field in home science you chose.

Interior designers in the United States are being paid $30,000 to $60,000. But then, salary is still based on skill and experience. Handicraft, soap-making, fabric and clothing, dairy are some that are being studied seriously and directly sold to the market. Commercial cooking or the food service industry is an example of one that employs a lot of people. Fast food chains such as McDonald’s and KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) hires contractually.

Day Care Centers (Child Development) or personal babysitting is mostly needed nowadays by busy parents. One of the first jobs adolescents apply for.

Treasurers (money managing) are needed in companies, movie productions, factories, etc. to list all the money needed and money being spent.

There are a lot of universities and colleges throughout the world with home science as a college course. Examples are: Punjab Agricultural University in India, The University of Delhi, and University of the Philippines, Home Economics College Dhaka Bangladesh and College of Home Economics in Egypt.

Today, government also provides vocational courses in handicrafts, sewing, haircutting, weaving cloths and rugs, baking bread, food-preserving and cooking. These are very helpful to those who did not have a chance to get into college.

Because families are the basic foundation in our society and meanwhile domestic or household knowledge is the basic foundation of a good and balanced family, it is obvious why people took courses like this and still taking it.

Knowledge in fabric-making, pottery, dairy, etc. that is being passed and perfected generation to generation will always be the only way to preserve our connection to the past and most especially the market industry of our economy.
