Microbiology Studies in Argentina

Microbiology studies bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms and their role in health, food, industry and the environment. In Argentina it is offered as a specific undergraduate degree at some public universities and as a field of postgraduate research. Teaching is in Spanish.

SpainExchange lists 1 school in Argentina with microbiology programmes: the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), a national university founded in August 1905 in La Plata, in the province of Buenos Aires.

How microbiology is studied in Argentina

At UNLP, microbiology is taught at the Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias (FCV), which runs the degree in Microbiología Clínica e Industrial alongside its veterinary medicine degree. As the name says, the degree covers both clinical microbiology (diagnosis of infections) and industrial applications. New students start with an entry course, and the faculty publishes the study plan, subject programmes and graduate profile on its website.

Practical training is part of the degree. Pre-professional placements (Prácticas Preprofesionales) are organised by a dedicated office that links students with tutors in public and private settings. Students can also take part in extracurricular placements linked to a department, laboratory or research institute recognised by the faculty.

Argentine universities describe degrees by years, subjects and teaching hours rather than ECTS credits. Related subjects are taught elsewhere at UNLP: the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, for example, offers a degree in Bioquímica.

Postgraduate study

Graduates can continue to a doctorate. Under the Higher Education Law (Ley 24.521), postgraduate programmes (specialisation, master's and doctorate) must be accredited by the Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria (CONEAU). The FCV's Doctorado en Microbiología is accredited by CONEAU. Applications are accepted all year through the faculty's registry office, except in January.

Admission and language

UNLP has 17 faculties, and applicants enrol online through the faculty of their chosen degree. Enrolment for the 2027 academic year runs from 9 November to 11 December 2026. A secondary-school certificate from abroad must be legalised by the education authority and the Argentine consulate, or apostilled. Applicants whose native language is not Spanish must prove an adequate level of Spanish, for example with the CELU certificate (Lengua y uso).

Students from countries with an education agreement with Argentina, among them Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Italy, must also convalidate their secondary-school certificate with the national education authority; the procedure is free. Foreign students enrolled as regular students at an officially recognised institution can apply for a temporary student residence, and UNLP tells foreign applicants that they need a student visa.

Costs

Under Ley 24.521, undergraduate studies at state universities are free for Argentine citizens and for foreign nationals with permanent residence; universities may charge other students for educational services. UNLP describes itself as a public, free institution with no cap on places. For the doctorate, the FCV asks applicants to contact its postgraduate accounts office about fees.

Careers

The FCV presents the degree together with its field of work, which covers clinical and industrial settings, and its placements take place in public and private organisations. In practice this points to work in clinical and diagnostic laboratories, in industry and, after a doctorate, in research.
