Microbiology Studies in Costa Rica
In Costa Rica, microbiology is studied as a health profession. The degree combines microbiology with clinical chemistry, and its graduates run the clinical laboratories of hospitals and clinics. SpainExchange lists one school in Costa Rica for this subject: the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), a public university whose Facultad de Microbiología is on the Rodrigo Facio campus in San José.
The faculty has taught under that name since 1957. Teaching is in Spanish, and the programme has a clinical emphasis because, according to the faculty, most graduates work in that area.
How the degree is organised
The main programme is the Licenciatura en Microbiología y Química Clínica (MQC). On completion it confers the academic degree of Licenciado or Licenciada and the professional degree of Doctor or Doctora. Costa Rican study plans are measured in the university's own credits, not in ECTS credits.
According to the faculty, the first part of the study plan builds on physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology. The professional part covers three areas: microbiology and immunology, parasitology and clinical analysis. Students learn automated analysis, serological diagnosis and techniques based on molecular biology, as well as the manual identification of microorganisms and parasites. Optional courses towards the end of the degree include biotechnology, food and water microbiology, veterinary microbiology and microbial ecology.
The degree ends with a final graduation project and a hospital internship, the Práctica Dirigida de Graduación (internado). The experimental and written work must be finished before the student enrols in the internship.
The faculty states that the licenciatura has been accredited by SINAES since 19 July 2007. SINAES is the body authorised by the Costa Rican state to accredit the quality of higher-education institutions and programmes.
Other levels
- Diplomado en Asistente de Laboratorio: a shorter programme, taught since 1977, that trains laboratory assistants and includes three hospital placements
- Academic master's degrees (Maestrías Académicas) in Microbiology, Parasitology, Clinical Chemistry and Immunology, with emphases in bacteriology, mycology and virology
- Clinical specialities for MQC graduates, such as haematology, medical bacteriology, medical mycology, and food and water microbiology; these programmes last two years
Research is carried out in units attached to the faculty, among them the Instituto Clodomiro Picado, founded in 1970, and the Centro de Investigación en Enfermedades Tropicales (CIET).
Admission and language
The main requirement for the licenciatura is the UCR admission exam. It is an academic aptitude test with mathematical and verbal reasoning items, and applicants compete for a place according to their score. Students from abroad who want a full bachelor's-level degree follow the same process through the Oficina de Registro e Información. Postgraduate applicants apply through the Sistema de Estudios de Posgrado.
Exchange students do not sit the admission exam. UCR asks visiting students to have passed at least three semesters of their degree at home, and non-native speakers need Spanish at CEFR level B2 or higher. The application also includes proof of financial means of at least USD 600 per month and, after admission, health insurance.
For student immigration requirements, UCR's international office refers applicants to its visa desk ([email protected]), which explains the procedure before the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería.
Costs
UCR charges tuition per credit. In the 2026 fee table, the full undergraduate rate for foreign students is ₡58,410 per credit, with a ceiling of ₡700,920 (12 credits). The rate for Costa Rican students is ₡16,050 per credit, with a ceiling of ₡192,600. Scholarship categories reduce these amounts by 45% to 100%, and there are small additional charges, for example for laboratories. The faculty also mentions socio-economic and merit scholarships.
Recognition and careers
The faculty describes its graduates as professionals who lead clinical and microbiological laboratories, implement and interpret laboratory analyses, apply quality control and take part in producing biological reagents for diagnosis and therapy. Emerging fields named in the study plan include molecular genetic diagnosis, biotechnology, toxicology and epidemiological surveillance.
People who obtained a university degree outside Costa Rica and want to work in their profession in the country must have it recognised. The procedure is handled by the Oficina de Reconocimiento y Equiparación (ORE) of CONARE together with the state universities. Graduates who plan to work elsewhere should check the recognition rules of that country.
