Art History Education in Argentina

Art History is a fascinating area of study, one that is offered by the majority of Argentina’s major colleges and universities.  One such institution is the National University of Cordoba, where Art History is offered at the undergraduate level, ultimately leading to a Bachelor of Arts Degree in the field.

Founded in 1613, the National University of Cordoba (UNC) is the oldest university in Argentina and one of the first in the Americas.  A rich history of events transformed UNC into an important center of cultural, scientific, political and social influence for the country of Argentina and the surrounding region, and today it remains one of the most significant institutions of higher learning in South America.

The undergraduate degree program in Art History at UNC is designed to give students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the arts and examine the various changes in style and format throughout history.  The program, which typically spans four years or eight semesters for full-time students, involves a variety of coursework, through which students receive a broad-based education in the history of paintings, sculpture and other artistic disciplines.  The classes students are required to take include titles such as the History of Western Art I and II, the History of Eastern Art I and II, Philosophy of Art and Beauty, Topics in Art History, History of Modern Design, Medieval Art, Renaissance Art, Art of the Romantic Period, the History of Sculpture and the History of Photography, among others.  Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to pursue a more specialized niche within the Art History discipline at the graduate level, leading to a Master of Arts Degree in Art History.
