Dentistry Studies in Ecuador

Dentistry (Odontología) in Ecuador is a university degree of the third level (tercer nivel), the level of bachelor's degrees. It is taught in person and in Spanish, and it combines classroom teaching with laboratory work and supervised treatment of patients in a university clinic. The graduate receives the professional title of Odontólogo or Odontóloga.

Ecuador has 64 universities and polytechnic schools, according to the Consejo de Educación Superior (CES): 36 public, 20 self-financed private and 8 co-financed private institutions. Not all of them offer Dentistry, and the state checks these programmes more closely than most, because Dentistry is classed as a career of public interest.

How the degree is organised

The Universidad de Cuenca shows how a programme is built. Its Dentistry degree lasts 10 cycles (semesters), or five years, and is taught in person. The curriculum moves in three steps:

  • Basic sciences in the first cycles: head and neck anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, histology, microbiology
  • Preclinical and clinical subjects from the third cycle: dental biomaterials, imaging, oral pathology, endodontics, periodontics, surgery, prosthodontics
  • Integrated clinic in the last four cycles, with paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, dental implantology, legal dentistry and public health

Students also complete community service placements and a degree project (Unidad de Titulación) in the final two cycles. The university sets a second-language requirement at B2 level, linked to the seventh cycle.

After the degree, dentists can continue with postgraduate study. The Facultad de Odontología of the Universidad de Cuenca has its own postgraduate section, with master's degrees and specialisations.

Where to study: Cuenca

The Universidad de Cuenca is a public university in the city of Cuenca, in the province of Azuay. It was created by legislative decree in October 1867 and has 12 faculties and 56 degree programmes. One of the faculties is the Facultad de Odontología, which is responsible for the degree, for research and for community service.

According to the university, students train in laboratories for preclinical work, simulation, imaging and dental prosthetics. They do their pre-professional practice in the university's own Clínica Odontológica and in outside health centres that have agreements with the university.

Admission

Public universities in Ecuador admit students through a process with national and local steps. For the September 2026 to February 2027 academic period, the Universidad de Cuenca describes it as follows:

  • Mandatory national registration on the platform of the Ministry of Education (2 to 13 June 2026)
  • Registration and application on the university's own platform (6 to 12 July 2026), with one degree programme in the first round
  • An entrance exam taken in person on the university's campuses (29 and 30 July 2026)
  • Allocation and acceptance of places (12 to 23 August 2026)

The application score combines the exam result, the applicant's academic record and extra points for affirmative action where they apply. Places depend on the score, the quota policy and the demand for each degree. A first degree at a public university is free of tuition; the university notes that a second degree is not covered by this rule.

Applicants with a foreign secondary school certificate should ask the admissions office ([email protected]) how their certificate is recognised before the national registration opens. Classes are in Spanish, so a good command of the language is needed from the first day.

Visa

Foreign students who stay for a full degree need a residence status. Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists "Estudiante" (student) as one of the categories of its temporary residence visa. Requirements and fees are published by the ministry and by Ecuadorian consulates and should be checked there before applying.

Accreditation and the right to practise

Quality control is in the hands of the Consejo de Aseguramiento de la Calidad de la Educación Superior (CACES). CACES evaluated the country's Dentistry programmes between 2015 and 2025 and publishes the list of accredited programmes with the resolution for each one. The Dentistry degree of the Universidad de Cuenca is on that list as accredited, and the university as a whole is on the CACES list of accredited universities.

A degree alone is not enough to work as a dentist in Ecuador. Graduates of careers of public interest, which include Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, must pass the Examen de Habilitación para el Ejercicio Profesional (EHEP), a national exam run by CACES. A candidate who fails the first two attempts must take a refresher course at an authorised university before trying again.

Careers

The Universidad de Cuenca names these fields of work for its graduates: public and private health institutions, private dental practices, teaching and research in health, and management roles in health institutions. Graduates who want to work outside Ecuador need to have the title recognised by the authorities of that country.
