About universities in Mozambique

Mozambique only recently won its freedom, and with its newfound independence, the educational system fell under complete and total reform. This had both beneficial and detrimental effects on their universities and other post-secondary programs. For example, there still exists, a very small percentage of Mozambique citizens that actually attend higher education institutions. This was primarily due to a great number of professors, and even students, departing the country both during and after independence. Gender and socio-economic inequalities still run rampant through any Mozambique institutions, despite efforts to boost female attendance and employ financial aid.

However, Mozambique has come a long way since the 1970’s. With over a dozen universities calling the African country home, students from this part of the world have more access to higher education than every before. By early 2000, the country even possessed a number of private government-funded or religiously affiliated institutions. After the addition of international funding programs, enrollment rates also rose.

Higher Education Institutions in Mozambique

Though Mozambique is still low on the international list for excellent education, the colleges in Mozambique do offer a significant number and variety of programs in undergraduate studies. Anything from architecture to economics is available for study. Students should understand, however, that the largest, oldest and most popular institution in Mozambique is Eduardo Mondlane University. Polytechnics – of which there are several in Mozambique – are also popular choices, as they boast of newer facilities, technologies and programs.

Generally, higher education in Mozambique is compromised of three levels:
  • Undergraduate (bachelor’s degree)
  • Graduate (master’s degree)
  • Doctorate (PhD)

Bachelor Degree and Professional Programs

Any university or college in Mozambique will offer undergraduate programs, though they may not unanimously offer bachelor degrees. In Mozambique, a bachelor degree is known as a Bachalerlato. This degree will take around two years to complete, though it can take as long as four. Usually, students will also achieve a Licenciatura, a two-year program that prepares individuals for master’s courses. Two-year training programs, such as the ones provided by polytechnics, are also available to Mozambique students. This includes teacher training, a dire need among all Mozambique schools.

Students can only attend a university or higher education institution if they have completed secondary school – an accomplishment only a few citizens tend to complete, due to financial difficulty. If individuals pursue higher education, they must also pass an entrance exam offered by the institution, which varies on whether the college is private, public or government-run.

Master and Doctorate Degrees in Mozambique

Master’s degree programs of study in Mozambique, though still rare, are growing daily. These courses, however, are only applicable to individuals that have completed a four-year master’s degree. Those with a different training program may not qualify for a master’s program.  Only top schools, such as the Eduardo Mondlane University, offer a master’s degree in Mozambique.

PhD programs are even more rare in Mozambique, having just recently been added to the higher education studies of the country. With only a select few courses offering these post-graduate studies, merely a handful of students pursue a doctorate in Mozambique. As a result of this and many educational issues, most Mozambique individuals
pursue higher education studies in areas outside of Mozambique. However, the government is in the process of serious educational reformation and hopes to address and improve undergraduate and graduate programs in their nation.
