About universities in Ukraine

The education system in Ukraine comes under the purview of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, under the provisions of the Law on Higher Education that was enacted in 2002. The higher education in Ukraine is offered by over 940 higher educational institutions (HEI), out of which 806 are public, and 134 are privately owned. Higher education in Ukraine is offered at four levels/ degrees namely Junior Specialist, Bachelor, Specialist and Master.
  • Level I includes vocational schools and other HEIs like them that teach junior specialists by using educational and professional programs (EPPs). This is incomplete higher education. The student gets a Minor Specialist’s degree.
  • Level II includes colleges in Ukraine and other HEIs like them which teach students and junior specialists, by using educational and professional programs (EPPs). This is also called basic higher education. It leads to a bachelor’s degree.
  • Level III studies are carried out at institutes, conservatories, academies and universities in Ukraine that teach bachelors, as well as junior specialists using educational and professional programs (EPPs). This is called complete higher education. This leads to a Specialist and Master’s degrees.
  • Level IV includes institutes, conservatories, academies, universities in Ukraine that teach bachelors, masters and specialists if need be, by using EPPs.
Ukraine follows the Bologna process of tertiary education; it was inducted in 2005. Universities in Ukraine offer three cycles of graduate and postgraduate degree programs.

 Bachelor’s Degree in Ukraine

The Bachelor’s degree in Ukraine can be obtained by successfully completing a Level II program. Students can apply for this level after completing the junior specialist training. The bachelor’s degree program is carried out in a four-year cycle. The program usually assigns about 30-35 percent of the course work time to professional training, with the rest devoted to theoretical studies. At the end of the program, students obtain 240 ECTS credits.

Master’s Degree in Ukraine

Upon completing the bachelor’s program, students can apply for Specialist or Master’s programs in Ukraine. For the Specialist degree (professional program in Ukraine), the normative training period is one year, and students obtain 60 ECTS credits upon completion. A specialist has adequate skills and knowledge sufficient for advanced, professional tasks and duties; the holder of this degree may perform professional activities at a technological level.

Programs for obtaining a Master’s degree in Ukraine span 1–1.5 years. At the end of which, students obtain 60-90 ECTS credits. A student studying under the Master’s program is required to write a final thesis and make a presentation on the same.

Specialist and Master’s level programs for fields like medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine begin upon completing secondary education, and hey span 5–6 years. Students, in this case, earn 301-360 ECTS credits at the end of the program.
Doctoral Programs in Ukraine

In Ukraine, the doctoral program (aspirantura, similar to PhD programs) is for students with a Specialist or a Master’s degree. Admission to such courses depends upon a competitive entrance examination. PhD programs are designed for three years of study and are based on a combination of study and research. The program requires students to prepare a public defense of their research thesis. If successful, the students are awarded the Candidate of Sciences’ degree (it is awarded by the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine upon the request of the corresponding defense council).
