About universities in Samoa

The National University of Samoa is one of the two universities in Samoa that offer diploma, certificate, undergraduate, and post graduate degree programs in the country.

The other university is an institute of higher education in Samoa that specializes in agriculture and was built with the help of funding from the Japanese government. Higher education in Samoa has undergone several changes in the last two decades. The university and colleges in Samoa have significantly improved over time in terms of syllabus, curriculum and quality of lecturers.

Every year, approximately 2,000 students enroll into various degree programs offered by the public university in Samoa, into programs in various faculties, including arts, education, business and entrepreneurship, science and nursing.

The public university has a staff of 300 and provides bachelors and masters degrees in Samoa in one of the eight faculties that the university offers. The university also offers a master’s degree in Samoan studies, which is the first of its kind in the world.

Those who have a secondary education completion certificate or have completed a diploma program are eligible to enroll into a bachelor degree program offered by universities in Samoa. The duration is typically three years, which are divided into six semesters. The degree programs are offered in full time and part time mode. English, History, Sociology and History are the most common subject areas for those who want to enroll into a Bachelor of Arts program.

Bachelor of Education is offered in two specializations- primary education and secondary education. Those who have obtained the foundation certificate in education are eligible for admission.

The public university offers higher education in Samoa at one of the following eight colleges or faculties:

Students looking to earn qualifications in higher education can choose from any of these faculties, or alternatively pursue their studies abroad. However, the economic conditions in the country limit the number of students, who can afford to study.
 
Although great strides have been made in the flied of higher education in Samoa, there is much more work to be done in order to meet the growing demand for education in the country. However, the government does realize the importance of a qualified and trained work force for overall national development and is continuously taking steps to address this problem.
