About Alexandria

Alexandria is Egypt's large port city on the Mediterranean coast. Its past as a centre of learning is still visible: the Lighthouse of Alexandria stood at the entrance of the eastern harbour from about 280 BC, and the Qait Bey Citadel now stands on the same site. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the city's modern library and cultural centre, describes itself as dedicated to recapturing the spirit of openness and scholarship of the ancient library.

For students, Alexandria is a large public-university city with a Mediterranean climate and a cosmopolitan history. The American University in Cairo describes cities like Cairo and Alexandria as a blend of many peoples and cultures, shaped by migrations since pharaonic times.
