Alfred University is a private university in the village of Alfred, New York (United States), in a rural area in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. Its history goes back to 1836. Teaching is organised in several schools and colleges:
- College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
- College of Business
- NYS College of Ceramics
- School of Art and Design and Performing Arts
- School of Engineering
Undergraduates can combine majors across schools. At graduate level, the university offers MS and PhD programmes, mainly in engineering and materials science, as well as MFA programmes such as Ceramic Art. The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1, and campus housing is guaranteed for all four years.
International applicants apply through the Common App or the Alfred University Application. They must submit official English proficiency scores and proof of funds, and accepted students are considered for a scholarship package.

International undergraduate applicants (anyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident) apply through the Common App or the Alfred University Application and submit:
- Official or certified transcripts with proof of graduation and a certified English translation
- An essay or personal statement
- At least one letter of recommendation
- Official English proficiency scores
- A certified bank statement and a signed financial certification form
- A copy of the passport photo page
- A portfolio or audition for art, design and performing arts
Accepted students pay a US$300 deposit.
Minimum English scores for international undergraduates: TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 100, or CEFR level B2. Completion of an ELS programme at an authorised partner ELS school is also considered on a case-by-case basis.
Accepted international students are considered for a scholarship package, but the university cannot always provide full funding, so applicants must show funds for housing, meals, student fees and part of tuition. Students who attend a virtual open house can qualify for a US$1,000 visit grant credited towards tuition. According to the university, 97% of students receive some form of financial aid.
Campus housing is guaranteed for all four years, and about 70% of students live on campus. New students live in residence halls that are co-ed by floor, and five living-learning communities are available. Incoming students receive sign-up instructions in early May (fall) or early December (spring).
