Arkansas State University (A-State) is a university in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and describes itself as the state's second-largest university, with 18,775 students. Besides the main Jonesboro campus, it teaches some bachelor's degrees at university centers in Beebe, West Memphis and Mountain Home, and runs two international campuses: A-State Campus Querétaro in Mexico and A-State Qatar in Doha, a partnership with the Global Studies Institute.

A-State offers more than 160 undergraduate and graduate programmes across eight academic colleges, from associate and bachelor's degrees to master's, specialist and doctoral degrees, both on campus and online. According to the university, more than 1,200 students from over 70 countries study there. International students can apply for undergraduate, graduate, online or exchange study, and receive pre-arrival support and immigration guidance. Students who need to improve their English can first take the university's accredited ESL programme.

Housing ranges from first-year residence halls to apartment-style living, and first-year students aged 17 or over are generally required to live on campus. International freshmen and transfer students with a 3.25 GPA can receive a scholarship of US$3,000 per year.

The Graduate School offers master's, specialist and doctoral degrees on the Jonesboro campus, and graduate programmes are also available online. International students apply through International Graduate Admissions. At A-State Qatar in Doha, courses are offered in areas such as educational leadership, digital design and engineering management. More than 200 graduate assistantships are filled each year.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduate applicants apply online, choosing the International Undergraduate type, and upload the required documents to the myDen portal. A decision is usually sent within 24-48 business hours after all documents are received.

  • Freshmen: GPA of 2.3 (on a 4.0 scale) from secondary school
  • Transfer students: GPA of 2.0 from a previous college or university; official transcripts are needed before a decision
  • All transcripts and academic records translated into English
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Application fee: US$50

First-year applicants do not need official documents for admission, but must hand them in on arrival before registering. Application deadlines: 1 November 2026 for Spring 2027, 2 March 2027 for Summer 2027 and 4 June 2027 for Fall 2027.

Scores must be less than two years old. Citizens of a list of English-speaking countries are exempt. Students who do not yet meet the requirement can first take A-State's accredited ESL programme.

Fees

Estimated costs for international undergraduates in the 2026-27 academic year (fall and spring):

  • 12 credit hours per semester: tuition US$15,024; total with mandatory fees, dormitory room and board and health insurance US$29,646
  • 15 credit hours per semester: tuition US$18,780; total US$33,540
  • ESL programme (full fall and spring semesters): tuition US$8,800; total US$25,214

Some colleges and courses charge additional fees.

Financial Aid

International students are considered for scholarships once fully admitted:

  • Undergraduate freshmen: US$3,000 per year, with a 3.25 GPA and A-State's English requirements met
  • Undergraduate transfer students: US$3,000 per year, with a 3.25 GPA and at least 24 transferable credit hours
  • Graduate assistantships: pay, the in-state tuition rate for master's students and a full tuition waiver for some doctoral students

The undergraduate scholarships cannot be combined with other scholarships.

Housing

University Housing offers first-year residence halls, apartment-style living and seven Living-Learning Communities for students with shared interests. Students can apply for housing only after being officially accepted. First-year students aged 17 or over must live on campus, with some exceptions. Residence halls close during the fall, winter and spring breaks (extended stays can be requested for a fee); apartments stay open. The estimate for a double room with a seven-day meal plan is US$6,110 per semester in 2026-27.
