Barnard College is a liberal arts college for women in Manhattan, New York City, founded in 1889. It had 3,223 students in 2025-26 and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Barnard has a historic partnership with Columbia University, across the street: students share academic resources, extracurricular activities, athletic fields and dining halls.
Students follow the Barnard Foundations curriculum and choose from departments and programmes such as:
- Sciences: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Neuroscience & Behavior, Physics and Astronomy
- Social sciences: Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Urban Studies
- Humanities: English, History, Philosophy, languages and area studies
- Arts: Architecture, Art History, Dance, Film Studies, Music, Theatre
Faculty-mentored research is available in the sciences and humanities. As of Fall 2024, international students made up 16% of the student body, representing 60 countries. Barnard meets 100% of the financial need of admitted students, but admission is need-aware for non-US citizens and non-permanent residents, and the college offers no merit awards. All applicants apply through the Common Application. Students can live in residence halls or off-campus housing.

All financial aid at Barnard is need-based; the college offers no merit awards. Barnard meets 100% of admitted students' demonstrated need with grants, loans and job opportunities. Funding for international first-year applicants is limited, so admission is need-aware for them. Aid must be requested at the same time as the admission application. In 2025-26, 35% of students received need-based aid.
