The Colegio Japonés de Madrid (Madrid Japanese School) is a Japanese school in Madrid, opened in 1981. In Spain it is registered as a private foreign school and belongs to the Fundación Cultural Japonesa; in Japan it is approved by the Ministry of Education (MEXT) as an overseas educational facility, and the ministry sends teachers to the school. Its purpose is to provide primary and lower-secondary education to Japanese children living in Spain in accordance with Japan's Basic Act on Education and School Education Act. The school is run by a committee elected from members of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Spain, whose member companies funded the purchase of the site.
- Primary school (equivalent to 1st to 6th year of Spanish primary)
- Lower secondary school (equivalent to 1st to 3rd year of ESO)
- Levelled English conversation classes with foreign teachers, 2 to 4 hours a week
- Spanish activities
Primary and lower secondary form one unified school with subject-specialist teaching and small groups. Because of its MEXT approval, graduates can go on to junior high and high schools in Japan; because it is recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education, pupils can also transfer to local schools, including international schools. A school bus runs on one route from central Madrid.
