El Quetzal Spanish School is a family-run Spanish language school in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala, founded in 1998. It is located at 7 calle 4-24, zona 1, is owned by a local Quetzaltecan family and is run by Glenda, the head of the family. Students of all levels are accepted, and the school aims to teach Spanish through contact with Guatemalan traditions, culture, politics and society.

All classes are one-on-one. Students choose between 25 and 20 hours of lessons per week, and the school also offers:

• DELE exam preparation
• Spanish lessons online
• Weekly social, political and cultural activities, such as a cooking class and a walk
• A flexible afternoon schedule for volunteers

At the end of the course students receive a diploma showing the hours attended and the level reached. Students can stay with a local host family near the school, with three meals a day for six days a week; this is optional. The school supports the local community through volunteer work and donations and runs a social project for Guatemalan girls.

All levels are accepted. Courses include weekly cultural activities (a cooking class, a sauce-making class and a short walk) and a diploma stating the hours attended and the level reached.

Students can stay with a Guatemalan host family; this is optional. All families live near the school and are experienced in hosting foreign students. Homestays include three meals a day for six days a week, with irregular meals on Sundays. The school takes preferences into account (for example homes with children or pets) and special diets. It can also recommend hotels and hostels.
