Miguel Angel Asturias Spanish School

Miguel Angel Asturias Spanish School (MAA) is a Spanish language school in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala, at 8a Calle 16-23, Zona 1, a five-minute walk from the central park. It was founded in 1995 by four Spanish teachers, two of whom still own and run it. The school is certified by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education (Mineduc) and the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT), and is a founding member of the Association of Spanish Schools of Quetzaltenango (ACEEQ).

Teaching is one-to-one, five hours a day, for all levels from complete beginners to nearly fluent speakers, and students usually get a new teacher each week. Classes are also offered online. Additional options include:

  • Medical Spanish (human, pharmacy and veterinary)
  • Business Spanish
  • Volunteer projects in the community at no extra cost
  • Activities and trips to markets, villages, farms and hot springs

College credit can be arranged. Students live with Guatemalan host families within a five- to ten-minute walk of the school, with three meals a day. Applications and enquiries are handled by the school's US office in Portland, Oregon; all classes take place in Guatemala.

Housing

Students stay with Guatemalan host families, all within a five- to ten-minute walk of the school. Families serve three meals a day, and vegetarian, vegan and other diets are catered for. Each student has a room with a bed and a study desk, and their own keys. Couples and families can be placed together, and child care can be arranged for students with small children.
