The English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Utah teaches English as a second language on the university campus in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has done so since 1990. Its Intensive English Program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) for the period August 2017 to August 2027, and the institute is authorised to issue the I-20 forms that international students need for a US student visa.

  • Intensive English Program: eight proficiency levels, for students on a student visa as well as part-time learners
  • General English: beginning and intermediate evening classes for tourists on B1/B2 visas and local residents (not for F-1 students)
  • Online classes for local and international students, with no visa required

Students who complete Level 8 of the Intensive English Program with a B average or higher can be admitted to undergraduate study at the University of Utah without a TOEFL or IELTS score. ELI staff help students with everyday matters such as keeping their visa status and getting around, and the institute organises activities such as hiking in the Wasatch Mountains, museum visits and trips to southern Utah.

Admission

Applicants seeking admission into the full-time, intensive program are expected to have graduated from an upper secondary school or its equivalent and have previously studied English a minimum of 3 years. Students who request an I-20 from ELI must complete the application form and return it with a $65 application fee and an official or notarized bank statement verifying financial support for the length of study desired (approximately $3,000 per session).
