Escuela Superior de Cerámica de L'Alcora

Higher education centre in L'Alcora, Spain

The Escola Superior de Ceràmica de l'Alcora (ESCAL) is a public centre for higher education in plastic arts and design, located in l'Alcora in the Valencian Community. It was founded in 2005 and belongs to the Instituto Superior de Enseñanzas Artísticas de la Comunidad Valenciana (ISEACV), which depends on the Generalitat Valenciana (the regional government).

ESCAL teaches one official degree, the Grado en Artes Plásticas, especialidad Cerámica (degree in plastic arts, ceramics speciality), which the school presents as an official degree like any university degree. It lasts four academic years (240 ECTS credits) and is taught in person, in morning or afternoon groups. The first year is common to all students; from the second year they choose one of two itineraries:

  • Scientific-technical: ceramic processes, materials and technologies
  • Design-artistic: creativity, visual expression and personal projects

The second semester of the fourth year is devoted to external work placements and the final project. The school states that it was the first higher education centre to have industrial digital decoration technology (inks, glazes and solid materials), which it teaches in several subjects. All applicants take a specific entrance test in July or September; holders of certain ceramics qualifications can enter directly. ESCAL received the Erasmus University Charter in 2007 and has exchange agreements with institutions in several European countries, with mobility periods of 3 to 9 months.
