The Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía is a higher music school in central Madrid, founded by Paloma O'Shea. It opened in September 1991 in Pozuelo de Alarcón, and Queen Sofía gave it her name and became its honorary president. Since the 2008-09 academic year it has been based in central Madrid, between the Royal Palace and the Teatro Real, in a building with a 351-seat auditorium, classrooms, practice rooms and a library.
The school teaches the official Grado en Enseñanzas Artísticas Superiores de Música (240 ECTS, four years), a higher arts qualification comparable to a university bachelor's degree. Performance is offered for orchestral instruments and percussion, piano and voice, alongside a speciality in Composition. Its official master's degrees (Máster en Enseñanzas Artísticas) are:
- Máster en Interpretación Musical
- Máster en Interpretación Musical Avanzado
- Máster en Composición Dramática y Ensemble Instrumental
Students are selected by audition; according to the school, the average admission rate is 6%. Tuition is free for all students through scholarships. Students perform regularly: the school organises more than 300 concerts a year at its Auditorio Sony and other venues.
