Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public, historically Black university in Tallahassee, Florida, founded on 3 October 1887. It is part of the State University System of Florida, an 1890 land-grant doctoral/research institution, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. FAMU enrols nearly 10,000 students from across the United States and more than 70 countries. According to FAMU, it was the top public HBCU in the U.S. News & World Report 2025 Top Public Schools list (#79).
The university offers about 100 degree programmes at undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional level, in colleges and schools that include:
- Agriculture and Food Sciences
- Engineering (joint FAMU-FSU college)
- Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Science and Technology
- Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities
- Business and Industry; Journalism and Graphic Communication
- Nursing and Allied Health Sciences
Besides the main Tallahassee campus, FAMU has the College of Law in Orlando and pharmacy and public health sites in Crestview, Tampa, Jacksonville and Miami. International applicants are handled with the Office of International Education and Development. More than 3,300 students live in on-campus residential facilities.

International first-year applicants apply online (FAMU lists the Common App for domestic and international freshmen) and pay a non-refundable $35 application fee. They submit:
- A course-by-course evaluation of all secondary and post-secondary records by a foreign credential evaluation agency, with certified English translations
- ACT or SAT results (freshmen and sophomore transfers)
- The International Student Financial Statement, with proof of funding for the first year and for the length of the programme (needed for the I-20)
- English proficiency scores if English is not the native language
- A 500-word essay and two recommendation letters
- AP, IB, AICE or CLEP results if applicable
Minimum English scores for undergraduate admission: TOEFL 80 (internet-based), IELTS Academic 6.5, Duolingo 120. Scores must be sent directly by the testing agency and are valid for two years. Applicants who studied English at an accredited US institution can submit that transcript instead.
More than 3,300 students live in FAMU's on-campus residential facilities, managed by the Office of University Housing, which also runs learning communities. Students apply for housing online.
